v      Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Telecom over Cloud (ToC):

Ø       Experiences and interests on NFV/ToC R&D and SDN application to telecom systems: architecture/design, SW architecture/design, resource management, performance, and high availability (HA);

Ø       Investigated and Identified the top technology issues of ToC/NFV and proposed solutions, such as, HW-SW separation at IaaS layer, automatic/dynamic/self-service provisioning at PaaS layer, and multi-tenants resource management and rapid creation and adaptation to new services and new API models at SaaS layer, 

v      Cloud system architecture/design for high performance and high availability

Ø       Elastic Computing System (ECS) architecture/design to support thousands, even millions of VMs, and their real-time monitoring, control, and resource management;

Ø       Critical E2E performance issues of cloud computing systems, including thin clients and Integrated Data Centers (IDC), and their solutions;

Ø       High availability and performance architecture/design of IDC, Block Storage System (BSS), and Object Storage System (OBS).

v      Telecom system (IMS/LTE/SAE, UMTS) architecture, high performance and availability:

Ø       Improve products’ availability and capacities, develop overload control approaches to achieve 10X overload with over 90% success rates of engineering capacity;

Ø       Telecom system business and projects in IMS, LTE/SAE, GPRS/UMTS, iDEN, CDMA1X/DO, WiFi, WiMAX, such as, build a team, develop system requirements, architecture and interface documents (voice call continuity, multimedia applications, mobility management, MIP and MIH, QoS, etc);

Ø       Expertise in mobility management (handoff time reduction for MIP), voice and data continuity (SIP-based session management), QoS (resource allocation and optimization), power management (profiles, standby, multimedia usages), capacity and bottleneck analysis (dynamic resource allocation), and high availability/reliability;

Ø       Critical parameters management (CPM) for business objectives:

§         Developed and led CPM practice to reach cost-saving goal, on-time delivery, and customer satisfaction (total about 250 CPs, about 70 CPs in top 10 categories);

§         Drove the architecture, development, integration, and testing teams to reach end-to-end CPM goals, such as, set end-to-end goals, budget CPs for subsystems and features, measure and track during the development, report results in QA review, etc.

v      Standards development in IETF, IEEE, and ETSI/NFV including specific topics in NFV, SDN, RTCWEB, RMCAT, overload control, performance, seamless mobility, and security.

EXPERIENCES

 

v      Huawei Technologies Inc. (USA) (2008 – now) Senior Technology Director

Ø       NFV (Network function virtualization) and ToC (Telecom over Cloud) system and software architecture, high availability (HA) project: NFV/ToC HA technical analysis and business analysis, ToC HA baselines, three-layer cluster-based ToC resource management architecture, and NFV/ToC HA architecture and design. Investigated and identified the top technical issues and provided solutions, such as,

·         NFV/ToC cluster-based three-layer resource management architecture,

·         Hardware and software separation,

·         Physical-virtual resources management for high reliability and performance;

·         NFV/ToC operating/managements and their differences from telecom OM;

·         Software reliability enhancements in NFV/ToC,

·         Stateful and stateless designs at API layer for HA and high performance and capacity, etc.

Ø       Core Network Overload Control Project: Worked on SGSN, GGSN, USN, and IMS overload control in the core network BU; led a team to develop and implement queuing-based overload control approach to achieve the best overload control performance in the industry: 10X overload with 90% success rate and 64X overload and 50%of engineering capacity;

Ø       Cloud Computing Performance Project: Worked on performance engineering of Huawei’s SingleCloud, including overall performance, ECS, OBS, and VBS performance, and solve key performance issues, such as SingleCloud performance baseline, ECS VM status inquiries and IDC capacity to manage up to 2M VMs in a cluster, OBS performance improvements, and my own prefix search approaches to speedup the OBS query for less than 1 sec.

Ø       Sky-incident-related HA, deep analysis of Sky-incidents and their root causes in chips, inter-communication, and platform, and proposed platform HA enhancements and their implementation;

Ø       Attended and contributed to IETF and IETS/NFV standards, in the areas such as SIP overload control, WEBRTC, RMCAT, NFV SW architecture, HA, and performance, etc.

 

v      Motorola (1995 – 2008)

Ø       Fellow of technical staff, Senior Director, Future Technology and Solutions, Mobile Devices (2005 – 2008).

·         Ensure successful delivery of ~$2.4B of products via agile architecture, system engineering, and development of wireless broadband devices and services, such as GSM/UMTS/ WiFi or CDMA/DOrA/WiFi devices in Android,Linux, and VRTX platforms;

·         Contributed to technology, business, roadmap development, and strategy for UMTS, and LTE/SAE, including HW and SW, such as chip set selection for multimedia, memory sizes, Android platforms, potential SW reuses, third-party SW requirements, and development and integration costs estimation;

·         Introduced, developed, and championed Motorola’s first critical parameters management (CPM) practice in Design For Six Sigma (DFSS). Achieved higher quality, released development burden at the system testing and bug fixing, and reduced product development cost by 10%;

·         Architecture development through modeling and simulation to solve technical and business issues, such as, video streaming frame per second, bus and memory requirements of concurrent applications, power drains, handoffs latency reduction, and optimization for business goals, such as developed method to reduce power consumption of mobile device by over 8%, increased the modem interface throughput by over 10% through interface timing optimization and buffer management;  

·         Voting member of IEEE802 standards development: Contributed to handoffs, Layers 1 and 2 specifications of handoffs, multi-radio power management, and handoff security. Investigated mobility management, handoff, paging, and power management in WiFi, WiMAX, 3GPP (SAE/LTE), 3GPP2, and IETF;

·         Introduced adaptive testing to reduce testing and development costs and improve the quality under budget constraints.

Ø       DMTS and Fellow of Technical Staff, Director, Head of Motorola High Availability Research Center, and Head of Motorola System Engineering Technology Center (SETC)  Motorola, (1998-2004):

·         Managed staff of 15 senior architects/system engineers to deliver projects, such as iDEN, 3G Nextel, GPRS, CDMA2000 1X, CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System), MANET (Mobile Ad-hoc Network), and DARPA projects;

·         Managed a distributed international team in US, Italy, China, and Singapore to successfully delivered HA projects on time and within the budget;

·         Made great contributions to Motorola’s 5NINES Initiative, designed to ensure 99.999% HA. Led and developed GPRS, iDEN, CDMA, UMTS, and CMTS to reach 5NINES goals. Improved Motorola’s bottom line;

·         Conducted research, development, and prototyping in high availability, WiFi, MANET, adaptive testing, active port and dynamic resource allocation, and DARPA project as Principal Investigator. Strong connection with universities and research institutes in US and oversea to solve technical issues in products, such as high availability, security, and huge state space of Markov chains.

·         Modeling and simulations in high availability and performance of products, such as iDEN, GPRS/EDGE, CISCO 5500, CMTS, etc. to reach business goals
